UFC 104 is finally almost here. I haven’t been this excited for a fight card since UFC 100 where GSP defended his welterweight title and Lesnar flipped his fans the finger was a douche defended his heavyweight title as well.

UFC 104 airs this Saturday, October 24, 2009 at 10pm EST on PPV.

A few predictions:

Light heavyweight championship bout

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida

Mauricio Rua vs Lyoto Machida

Mauricio Rua vs Lyoto Machida

The clash between shotokan karate and muay thai will be interesting, as Rua will look to annihilate Machida with raw power, while the ever-elusive Machida will execute his strategy to perfection against such an aggressive fighter. Rua will probably want to smash Machida, and despite the fact that people have credited Machida’s fighting style as unorthodox, The Dragon lands 65% of his shots, second only to fellow Brazilian fighter Anderson Silva. I think Rua will withstand Machida’s powerful shots, but Machida’s intelligence and conditioning will allow him to win this fight.

Prediction: Machida by unanimous decision

Fun fact: Rua used to model in Brazil.

Heavyweight bout

Cain Velasquez vs Ben Rothwell

Cain Velasquez vs Betn Rothwell

Cain Velasquez vs Ben Rothwell

I wonder how pissed Cain is since being denied a shot as the #1 contender to face Brock Lesnar, so I believe we will see him demolish Rothwell – who has yet to set foot in the octagon – and prove to Dana White he is a worthy opponent to take on Lesnar. I don’t give Rothwell a fighting chance against this well-rounded wrestler.

Prediction: Velasquez by KO in the second round.

Fun fact: Velasquez has a degree in education.

Lightweight bout

Joe “Daddy” Stevenson vs Spencer Fisher

Joe Stevenson vs Spencer Fisher

Joe Stevenson vs Spencer Fisher

Stevenson’s favorite moves are the guillotine and rear-naked choke, 46% of his wins are by submission and he has begun training in Greg Jackson’s camp (Greg Jackson currently trains a fighter you may already know). I like his chances against Fisher, whose propensity to brawl will inevitably lead him to wear himself out and make a small but deadly mistake, costing him the fight.

Prediction: Stevenson by submission in the third round.

Fun fact: Stevenson had his first pro fight at age 16.

Fun fact about this blogger: I love friendly gambling of all sorts, so if anyone cares to make a propbet, sidebet, over/under bet, whatever — decide what you’re willing to lose and write your suggestion/offer in the comments section.

I will review the fights at the beginning of next week and attempt to explain to you why my predictions were so far off.
